Title: Stradivarius versus new violin

Player preferences among new and old violins

Short version: Hugely expensive violins made by the great Stradivarius are not necessarily any better than vastly cheaper new instruments.

Why am I not surprised?

Interesting. This reminded me of the email I got five years ago

Hi,

I really enjoyed your quizzes. I thought of some other fun ones that
could be included. Obviously this one requires quite a bit of  fieldwork,
but it would be interesting to see what percentage of the  population
could tell the difference between a student violin and a  Stradivarius or
a console piano and a Bosendorfer. Secondly in the  same vain as the midi
sound example, it would be neat to see how many  people could
differentiate someone playing an acoustic and digital  piano. Thanks for
the neat site,

Afrooz

As far as I know, modern digital pianos have such excellent sound that even experts cannot hear any difference between them and mechanical ones.

Another issue which came up on a music message board that I am a member of: should boy choirs take in girls? Is there a meaningful difference between the voices of prepubescent boys and girls? I don't know whether any scientific research has been done on the issue, but perhaps the people who choose potential choristers during auditions should not see who is singing.

Somehow I am not surprised - our technology is supported by a computer, so the precition of making violins is incomparable.
